Assam CM Welcomes Appeals To Refrain From Cow Slaughter During Eid
Assam CM welcomes Eid committees’ appeal to avoid cow slaughter during Eid.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday welcomed appeals from several Eidgah committees and members of the Muslim community in the state who have voluntarily called for refraining from cow slaughter during Eid celebrations. The Chief Minister said the initiative would help strengthen cultural harmony and social unity across Assam, particularly in regions where diverse communities coexist closely.
In a post on social media platform X, Sarma noted that multiple Eidgah committees had earlier urged people to avoid cow sacrifice, and now members of the Muslim community in several districts had independently adopted the appeal. He described the development as a positive step toward reinforcing mutual respect and understanding among communities in the state, especially during religious observances.
The Chief Minister specifically highlighted reports from districts including Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Hojai, and Kamrup, where similar appeals had been made. He said such voluntary actions reflected a growing sense of shared cultural responsibility and would further strengthen Assam’s social cohesion. Sarma also expressed appreciation to committees and citizens who supported the initiative, calling it an encouraging sign of unity.

Earlier, Sarma had also referred to a statement by the Dhubri Town Eidgah Committee, which reportedly urged people to refrain from cow slaughter in order to respect the sentiments of the Hindu community and comply with existing laws. The Chief Minister has consistently encouraged Eid committees across the state to adopt similar measures ahead of the festival period.
The issue has sparked discussion in Assam’s political and social circles, with the state government continuing to emphasise communal harmony alongside strict enforcement of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021. The law regulates cattle slaughter, sale, and transportation in the state, and has been a focal point of policy debates in recent years regarding cultural practices and legal compliance.
Observers note that the Chief Minister’s remarks come amid broader efforts by the state administration to promote inter-community understanding while maintaining regulatory oversight on cattle protection. The voluntary appeals by community groups are being seen as a notable development in Assam’s ongoing discourse on tradition, law, and social harmony.
