Assam Assembly: Zubeen Garg’s Death Was “Plain Murder,” Not Accident, Says CM

Assam Assembly told singer’s death was “plain murder”, not accident.

In an electrifying intervention that stunned the Assam Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday declared that the death of Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg in Singapore on September 19 was “not an accident” but a deliberate, premeditated murder, instantly transforming the case from a suspected drowning into one of the state’s most serious criminal investigations.

Addressing the House during an opposition-sponsored adjournment motion, Sarma explicitly rejected milder interpretations of the incident, stating that the evidence gathered so far rules out both “culpable homicide not amounting to murder” and mere “criminal conspiracy”, and instead points unequivocally to “plain murder” under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, ensuring that the seven individuals already in judicial custody face the gravest possible charges.

The Chief Minister’s bombshell revelation came exactly sixty-seven days after the 52-year-old singer-composer drowned during a yacht outing while attending the North East India Festival in Singapore, an event initially portrayed as a tragic mishap but which rapidly spiralled into statewide outrage as fans and citizens filed over sixty complaints alleging deliberate negligence and foul play by the entourage accompanying Garg.

In response to mounting public pressure, the Assam government had promptly formed a high-powered Special Investigation Team under the CID and constituted a one-man judicial commission headed by sitting Gauhati High Court Justice Soumitra Saikia, which on Monday extended the deadline for recording witness statements and receiving evidence until December 12, underscoring the intricate nature of the probe and the volume of material being examined.

As the Singapore Police Force continues its own independent investigation and substantial financial irregularities exceeding ₹1.1 crore surface in the bank accounts of Garg’s arrested personal security officers, the case has gripped the entire Northeast, with millions anxiously awaiting the outcome of dual probes that could expose shocking truths behind the mysterious demise of Assam’s most beloved musical voice.
