Ashwini Vaishnaw Pushes Nationwide Subway Initiative to Prevent Accidents

Railway Ministry to build subways to ensure safe track crossings

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday directed officials from all railway zones to plan and construct subways across settlement areas near railway tracks to enhance commuter safety and prevent accidents. Speaking at a workshop with senior railway officials, Vaishnaw emphasized that the subways should be designed to encourage public usage, ensuring that people feel safe and comfortable while crossing. He specifically instructed that these pedestrian underpasses must be resilient against waterlogging during the monsoon season, addressing a common challenge in existing infrastructure.

An official statement from the Ministry of Railways outlined that the initiative aims to cover all settlement areas located in proximity to railway tracks over the next five to six years. The focus will be on locations where residents regularly cross tracks for daily activities, reducing the risk of fatal accidents.

“These subways will provide safe, convenient, and reliable passage for locals who frequently traverse railway lines. This proactive step is part of our broader commitment to improving railway safety across the country,” the ministry said.

The plan reflects the government’s long-term strategy to modernise rail infrastructure while prioritising public safety, combining engineering innovation with urban planning to create subways that are both functional and accessible. Officials were asked to incorporate community-friendly designs and ensure proper drainage systems to prevent flooding during heavy rains.

This initiative comes amid increasing efforts by the Ministry of Railways to leverage technology and infrastructure development to reduce accidents, enhance commuter safety, and improve overall efficiency across India’s extensive rail network.
