India Has 74-Day Reserve Capacity, 60 Days of Stock Cover Amid Gulf Crisis: Government
The government confirms 74-day fuel reserves and urges citizens to avoid panic buying amid Gulf tensions.
The Centre on Thursday reassured citizens that India’s energy supplies remain secure for the coming months, dismissing rumours of shortages and urging the public not to indulge in panic buying of fuel and LPG. In an official statement, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG anywhere in the country. The ministry warned that misinformation circulating on social media has triggered unnecessary panic, leading to isolated instances of fuel hoarding.
The clarification comes amid rising global tensions due to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has raised concerns over global oil supply chains. Despite this, the government emphasised that India’s supply lines remain stable.

According to the ministry, India currently holds 74 days of total reserve capacity and about 60 days of actual stock cover, including crude oil, refined products, and strategic reserves. It further stated that crude procurement for the next two months has already been secured, ensuring uninterrupted supply regardless of global developments.
India’s diversified sourcing strategy has also helped cushion potential disruptions. The ministry noted that the country is receiving crude oil from over 41 suppliers worldwide, offsetting any reduced inflow through the Strait of Hormuz.
Highlighting India’s global energy position, the government said the country is the world’s fourth-largest refiner and fifth-largest exporter of petroleum products, supplying fuel to more than 150 nations.
On LPG availability, the ministry confirmed that domestic production has been increased by 40%, with daily output reaching 50 thousand metric tonnes against a demand of around 80 thousand metric tonnes. Oil marketing companies are currently delivering over 50 lakh cylinders daily. While demand had briefly surged to 89 lakh cylinders due to panic ordering, it has since stabilised.
The government also reiterated that the promotion of piped natural gas (PNG) is part of a long-term energy strategy and not a response to any LPG shortage. It described claims suggesting otherwise as misleading. Reassuring the public, the Centre said India remains “completely secure” in terms of energy availability for the foreseeable future and advised citizens to rely only on official information.
