Artificial Lake Triggers Flood Crisis in Uttarakhand’s Syanachatti!
Yamuna blockage floods Char Dham route; rescue teams rush to protect lives and infrastructure.
A sudden blockage in the Yamuna River, caused by boulders falling from nearby hills, has created an artificial lake in Syanachatti, Uttarkashi district, flooding homes, hotels, and infrastructure in this key stop on the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage route to Yamunotri. On Friday, officials reported that the water level in the lake has receded by approximately two feet naturally, but efforts to channelize the water remain challenging.
The blockage occurred on Thursday evening, submerging a local bridge and disrupting vehicular movement. According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) in Dehradun, over 40 houses and hotels have been inundated, prompting the evacuation of approximately 300 residents to safer locations. Multiple agencies, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Public Works Department, and Irrigation Department, are on-site, working to mitigate the crisis.
State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman acknowledged the difficulties faced by rescue teams, noting that alternative strategies are under consideration. District Magistrate Prashant Arya and Yamunotri MLA Sanjay Dobhal are overseeing operations, with drones monitoring the affected area and teams from the Health, Revenue, and Food Supply departments providing relief support.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed authorities to prioritize drainage efforts and ensure the availability of essential supplies, including food, LPG, medicines, and fuel, for those affected. The situation remains precarious as teams race against time to prevent further flooding and safeguard the town, a vital hub for pilgrims and locals alike.
