Arjun Ram Meghwal Calls For Justice To Reach Every Individual

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal on Saturday said justice must reach every individual and cannot remain confined to courtrooms. Addressing the inaugural session of the two-day West Zone Regional Conference on “Enhancing Access to Justice” at the Brilliant Convention Centre in Indore, Meghwal described access to justice as a constitutional commitment and said the conference would contribute to shaping the future of India's justice system.

Meghwal said the two-day conference was more than an official gathering and represented a broader vision for making the justice system more accessible to people. He noted that India is widely recognised as the “Mother of Democracy”, but said the country's civilisational traditions also placed importance on the rule of law, natural justice, dialogue, consensus-building, mediation and public welfare.

Referring to the Constitution, the Union minister said Indian thought had long been rooted in values such as morality, equality and human dignity. He pointed to the prominence given to justice in the Preamble, which identifies social, economic and political justice as fundamental constitutional principles. Meghwal said these principles should translate into a justice system that is accessible and responsive to people beyond formal courtroom proceedings.

The conference is being held from August 8 to 9 under the joint auspices of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), the Madhya Pradesh State Legal Services Authority and the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Chief Justice of India and Patron-in-Chief of NALSA Justice Surya Kant inaugurated the conference along with other judges by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Specially-abled children also welcomed the judges at the venue.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Supreme Court Judge and Executive Chairman of NALSA Justice Vikram Nath, Supreme Court Judge and Supervising Judge of the Goa State Legal Services Authority Justice Manmohan, Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court Justice Vivek Rusia and other judges are participating in the conference. Judicial officers, legal services authority officials and other stakeholders are also attending discussions aimed at making the justice system more inclusive and people-centric.

The first technical session will focus on “Mediation beyond the courts: Building a culture of dialogue, community resolution, and inclusive participation”. The session will examine ways to strengthen mediation and community-based mechanisms for resolving disputes, while encouraging dialogue and wider participation. The conference is expected to explore approaches that can reduce dependence on conventional courtroom proceedings and improve access to justice for people across different sections of society.
