Apply Online For PNG Gas Connection: Step-By-Step Guide And Requirements

Learn steps, documents, and costs to apply for PNG gas connection online.

As part of its push to diversify domestic energy sources, the government of India is accelerating the expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) networks, while considering the eventual discontinuation of LPG supply to households in areas where PNG is available. The move is intended to reduce dependence on imported LPG, especially amid supply disruptions caused by conflicts in the Persian Gulf region.

Under the recently issued Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026, released by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on March 24, households with access to PNG will have three months to switch from LPG. Exceptions are provided for locations where installation is technically unfeasible, provided a no-objection certificate (NOC) is obtained. The directive also invokes the Essential Commodities Act, requiring landowners, both residential and commercial, to grant pipeline access to facilitate nationwide rollout.

Officials highlight the advantages of PNG, including continuous supply without the logistical challenges of cylinder refills, greater energy reliability, and lower long-term operational costs. Cities with established networks already benefit from convenient billing and reduced dependency on deliveries, making PNG a practical choice for both domestic and commercial users.

How to Locate PNG Providers
Consumers can begin by identifying the local distributor licensed by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB). Notable city gas distribution companies include:

  • Indraprastha Gas Ltd. (IGL) – Delhi-NCR
  • Mahanagar Gas Ltd. – Mumbai
  • Gujarat Gas Ltd. – Gujarat cities
  • Adani Total Gas Ltd. – Vadodara, Faridabad
  • GAIL Gas Ltd. – Bengaluru, Patna

Steps to Apply for a PNG Connection

  1. Verify Availability: Check your distributor’s website using your pincode to confirm pipeline access in your area.
  2. Submit Application: Applications can be filed online or offline at authorised centres. Required documents include ID proof, address proof, and property-related papers such as ownership certificates or rental agreements.
  3. Cost Considerations: A refundable security deposit, typically between ₹5,000–₹10,000 depending on usage, is required.
  4. Installation Timeline: Post-approval, a site inspection is conducted followed by pipeline and meter installation with safety checks. Activation usually takes 7–15 days in areas with existing pipelines; newer locations may take longer.

Documents Required

  • Identity proof: Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, passport, or driving licence
  • Address proof: Utility bills, rental agreements, ration card, or property tax receipt
  • Ownership documents: Sale deed, registered ownership papers, society certificate, or tax receipts
  • Tenant-specific: Landlord-issued NOC with ownership proof
  • Passport-size photographs

PNG connections offer uninterrupted gas supply and competitive tariffs compared to LPG, eliminating the need for cylinder management. While penetration is strong in metros and parts of Gujarat, smaller towns and southern regions still face limited infrastructure, highlighting the ongoing need for network expansion.
