Andhra Pradesh Gears Up for Heavy Rains as Deep Depression Nears Coast

The home minister directs officials to ensure disaster readiness; the IMD forecasts downpours and strong winds.

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister V. Anitha on Friday directed state officials to heighten preparedness as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal approaches, expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to the region. The minister ordered the immediate establishment of control rooms, installation of warning signs, and readiness of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and fire services to address potential emergencies. Anitha emphasised that field-level officials must be equipped to handle any situation, particularly in districts vulnerable to flooding and heavy rain.

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) forecasts the depression will cross the south Odisha–north Andhra coasts by Saturday morning, September 27, 2025, causing extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Districts including Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla, Palnadu, Prakasam, Nellore, Godavari, Kurnool, and Nandyal are expected to experience moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by squally coastal winds up to 50 kmph. Authorities have advised fishermen to avoid sea voyages until Monday and urged the public to steer clear of overflowing canals and unsafe structures like trees during the storm.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning across Andhra Pradesh until October 2. North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP) and Yanam may see heavy to very heavy rainfall, while Rayalaseema could experience heavy showers at isolated locations on September 26. Thunderstorms and winds of 30–50 kmph are forecast across NCAP, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP), and Rayalaseema through September 29, with isolated thunderstorms and heavy rain continuing in coastal districts and Yanam until October 2.

The IMD noted that a well-marked low-pressure area in the northwest and central Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression, crossing the coast by Saturday morning. The state’s proactive measures aim to mitigate risks of flooding and ensure public safety as Andhra Pradesh prepares for the severe weather event.
