Amit Shah To Unveil National Narcotics Control Roadmap
Government plans stronger nationwide anti-drug enforcement.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to intensifying its fight against drug abuse and narcotics trafficking, stressing that the government would continue dismantling drug syndicates while ensuring treatment and rehabilitation for individuals affected by addiction. Speaking on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Shah said India had adopted a comprehensive strategy under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to combat the growing global drug menace.
In a post on X, Shah extended his greetings to officials and personnel involved in the nationwide anti-drug campaign, describing them as “warriors” in the battle against narcotics. He said the government was focused on eliminating narco-cartels through strict enforcement while simultaneously providing compassionate care and rehabilitation to those struggling with addiction. Shah also called for renewed efforts to protect the country’s youth from the dangers of drug abuse under the “Nasha Mukt Bharat” initiative.
As part of the government’s anti-drug campaign, Shah is scheduled to chair the 10th apex-level meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD), organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). During the meeting, he will unveil the “Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026–2029),” a three-year policy framework prepared after consultations with central ministries, state governments, enforcement agencies and other stakeholders. Representatives from 44 central ministries and departments are expected to participate in the meeting.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the vision document outlines a comprehensive roadmap aimed at reducing both the demand and supply of narcotics while strengthening harm reduction measures. The framework places emphasis on a network-based enforcement strategy to curb organised drug trafficking and addresses emerging threats such as synthetic drugs, darknet-enabled narcotics trade, youth vulnerability and the expansion of treatment and rehabilitation services across the country.
The government said the roadmap will guide policy implementation and institutional strengthening over the next three years to enhance coordination among enforcement agencies and improve the overall effectiveness of India's anti-drug strategy. Officials believe the integrated approach will help disrupt drug networks while promoting preventive awareness and recovery programmes for affected individuals.
As part of the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, authorities across India are also conducting a nationwide drug disposal campaign. During the fortnight-long drive, enforcement agencies are expected to destroy approximately 2,09,500 kilograms of seized narcotics valued at nearly ₹6,000 crore, in accordance with legal procedures. Observed annually on June 26 since 1989, the United Nations-recognised day seeks to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse and strengthen global efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking.
