Amit Shah Concludes Bihar Tour with Seemanchal, India-Nepal Border Security Review

Amit Shah reviews Seemanchal, Nepal border security; calls infiltration major threat to national safety.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday concluded his three-day visit to Bihar’s Seemanchal region after chairing a high-level review meeting on security along the India–Nepal border. The meeting, held in Purnea district, focused on threats emanating from the open border with Nepal and concerns over illegal infiltration, officials said.

District magistrates and superintendents of police from 12 bordering districts attended the meeting, along with senior officers from the Seema Sashastra Bal (SSB), the Border Security Force (BSF), the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Bihar government. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, Chief Secretary Pratyay Amrit, and Director General of Police Vinay Kumar were also present. According to officials, the discussions formed the third part of a comprehensive review of border security arrangements in the region.

An official familiar with the deliberations said the meeting addressed existing border conditions, demographic changes, and the challenge of suspected anti-national elements entering India through Nepal. The SSB, which is tasked with guarding the 729-kilometre stretch of the 1,751-kilometre India–Nepal border that falls within Bihar, was directed to intensify patrolling based on intelligence inputs. Authorities were also instructed to ensure effective implementation of development schemes in villages along the border while maintaining heightened surveillance.

Shah began his tour on February 25 with a meeting of the Land Ports Authority of India, which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs and oversees border infrastructure development. On Thursday, he visited Araria, where he dedicated new border outposts to the nation and launched SSB projects worth ₹175 crore.

During the visit, Shah reiterated that eliminating illegal infiltration remains a top priority of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said states such as Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal had become vulnerable to demographic changes due to unchecked infiltration and expressed confidence that his party would address the issue, particularly in West Bengal ahead of its upcoming assembly elections.
