All Power to the CMO: Opposition Decries Lack of Trust in Yogi's Own Cabinet Ministers
Akhilesh criticises UP government over UPEIDA administrative transfer decision.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday launched a fresh attack on the Uttar Pradesh government after the state transferred the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) to a department under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, triggering a political exchange over administrative control and governance priorities.
The decision effectively moved oversight of UPEIDA away from the industrial development department, previously handled by senior BJP leader and minister Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi, and placed it under the infrastructure portfolio led by the Chief Minister’s office. The restructuring is aimed at streamlining decision-making and accelerating expressway-related projects across the state, according to government sources.
Reacting to the move, Akhilesh Yadav criticised the BJP leadership, alleging that the restructuring reflected internal concerns about governance efficiency and accountability. He also suggested that the ruling party’s legislators and candidates were more focused on personal interests than public service, which he claimed contributed to the party’s electoral setbacks in certain constituencies.

The administrative change has been described by officials as part of a broader effort to centralise key infrastructure decisions and reduce delays in project approvals. UPEIDA, which oversees major expressway development and industrial corridor projects in Uttar Pradesh, plays a central role in the state’s infrastructure expansion strategy.
Under the revised arrangement, project files, budgets, and approvals linked to UPEIDA will now be processed directly under the Chief Minister’s infrastructure oversight framework. Officials say this is intended to improve coordination between departments handling industrial development and large-scale infrastructure works.
The restructuring has also reignited political debate in the state, with opposition leaders questioning the timing and intent of the move, while the government maintains that it is purely administrative in nature and aimed at improving efficiency in executing high-value infrastructure projects. As the exchange continues, the shift of UPEIDA has become the latest flashpoint in Uttar Pradesh politics, highlighting the ongoing contest between the ruling BJP and the opposition Samajwadi Party over governance, development priorities, and administrative control of key institutions.
