Akhilesh Yadav Expresses Grief Over Stepbrother Prateek Yadav’s Unexpected Passing

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday described the sudden death of his stepbrother, Prateek Yadav, as “extremely heartbreaking.” The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister rushed to the Civil Hospital in Lucknow after Prateek, 38, fell ill in the early hours of the day and was pronounced dead upon arrival, according to hospital sources.
Following initial procedures at the Civil Hospital, Akhilesh Yadav proceeded to King George Medical University, where an autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. The Samajwadi Party leader did not speak to the media at either facility but shared a brief statement on X, expressing his grief and offering prayers for Prateek’s soul.
Prateek Yadav had been admitted to Medanta Hospital about ten days ago for a health-related issue, a visit during which Akhilesh reportedly checked on him personally. Despite belonging to one of Uttar Pradesh’s most prominent political families, Prateek had largely stayed away from active politics, instead focusing on fitness and personal pursuits.

His wife, Aparna Bisht Yadav, is affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party and currently serves as vice chairperson of the State Women Commission. Prateek was the son of late Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and his second wife, Sadhna Gupta, connecting him closely to the state’s influential political lineage.
The news of his sudden passing has drawn condolences from family members and political circles alike. While details regarding the circumstances of his illness remain limited, authorities have emphasized that a full autopsy will be conducted to clarify the cause of death.
