Akal Takht Demands One-Month Delay For Anti-Sacrilege Bill Consultations

Akal Takht orders one-month delay for anti-sacrilege bill with wider consultations and debate.

The Akal Takht, the highest temporal authority of the Sikh community, has urged the Punjab government to delay the proposed Anti-Sacrilege Bill by one month to allow legislators and stakeholders sufficient time to study its provisions. Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj said the legislation deals with deeply held religious sentiments and should not be rushed through the Assembly without adequate consultation and deliberation. The appeal came after several Punjab MLAs reportedly admitted that they had not read the draft Bill in full.

Addressing the issue, Giani Gargaj said the coming month should be utilised for extensive consultations with religious organisations, legal experts and representatives from different sections of society. He stressed that any legislation concerning matters of faith and public sentiment must be carefully examined before being debated or passed. According to the Jathedar, the admission by lawmakers that they had not reviewed the proposed law highlighted the need for a more transparent and comprehensive legislative process.

The Akal Takht maintained that every legislator should have adequate time to understand each provision of the Bill before participating in discussions or voting in the Punjab Assembly. Giani Gargaj said laws involving religious and social issues require careful scrutiny to ensure they are legally sound and command broad public confidence. He urged the state government to postpone the legislative process by a month so that informed discussions could take place before the Bill is introduced.

The demand received support from several opposition leaders, who questioned the speed at which the government was moving forward with the proposed legislation. Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa said MLAs had not been given enough time to examine the draft in detail and argued that laws dealing with sensitive religious matters should only be enacted after thorough discussion. Congress leader Pargat Singh echoed similar concerns, saying wider consultations would help address legal and constitutional issues while strengthening the proposed law.

Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira also backed the call for additional time, stating that lawmakers should not be expected to legislate on such an important matter without first understanding every aspect of the Bill. He said transparency, detailed debate and informed participation are essential elements of a democratic legislature, particularly when legislation concerns issues that affect religious harmony and public sentiment.

The proposed Anti-Sacrilege Bill has emerged as a significant political and religious issue in Punjab, drawing close attention from political parties, religious bodies and civil society. While there is broad agreement on protecting religious sentiments, differences remain over the legal framework, implementation and constitutional implications of the legislation. Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhawan has assured that all suggested amendments to the Bill will be debated before any final decision is taken, leaving the government to decide whether it will proceed as scheduled or opt for wider consultations over the coming weeks.
