Advocates Bid Emotional Farewell to Ex-VP Dhankhar

Advocates escort Dhankhar to private farmhouse residence.

Over two dozen advocates, primarily from the Akhil Bhartiya Adhivakta Parishad, gathered to bid a heartfelt farewell to former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar as he vacated the Vice President’s Enclave on Monday evening. Dhankhar, who resigned from his post on July 21, 2025, citing health concerns, relocated to a private farmhouse in Chhatarpur, South Delhi, owned by Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Abhay Chautala.

The move marks a significant transition for Dhankhar, whose term as Vice President was originally set to conclude on August 10, 2027. After stepping down six weeks ago, the former Vice President has maintained a low profile, staying out of the public eye while continuing to reside at the official Vice President’s Enclave near Parliament House until Monday. The advocates’ presence during his departure underscored the respect and support he commands within legal circles, reflecting his long-standing association with the legal community as a senior advocate and former Governor of West Bengal.

Dhankhar’s relocation to the Chhatarpur farmhouse is temporary, as he awaits the allocation of a bungalow befitting his status as a former Vice President. The advocates, many of whom have worked closely with Dhankhar during his tenure, accompanied him to the farmhouse in a show of solidarity, ensuring a dignified send-off from the official residence.

The timing of Dhankhar’s move coincides with preparations for the upcoming vice-presidential election, scheduled for September 9, 2025. The contest pits NDA candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan, the current Governor of Maharashtra, against opposition nominee B. Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge. The election will determine Dhankhar’s successor, who will assume the role of Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Dhankhar’s resignation, announced on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament, surprised many, given his active engagement in public life and his reputation as a vocal advocate for constitutional values. While he cited health reasons for his exit, speculation has swirled about the political undercurrents surrounding his decision. His move to a private residence marks a new chapter, with the legal community’s gesture highlighting his enduring influence and the respect he commands among peers.

As the nation awaits the outcome of the vice-presidential election, Dhankhar’s departure from the Enclave serves as a poignant reminder of his contributions to Indian governance and law, with advocates ensuring his transition was marked with warmth and camaraderie.
