Adani Defence Delivers 2,000 Prahar LMGs to Army: 11 Months Ahead of Schedule

Adani Defence delivers 2,000 indigenous Prahar LMGs to the Indian Army from the Gwalior facility.

Adani Defence & Aerospace has delivered 2,000 indigenously manufactured Prahar 7.62 mm Light Machine Guns (LMGs) to the Indian Army, marking a significant milestone in India’s push for defence self-reliance. The delivery highlights the growing capabilities of the domestic defence manufacturing sector and reinforces the government’s focus on reducing dependence on imports.

The first batch of weapons was completed in just seven months, significantly ahead of the contracted timeline. The First-of-Production Model (FOPM) was achieved in six months—well before the stipulated 18-month development period—followed by Bulk Production Clearance (BPC), which enabled rapid scaling of manufacturing.

The Prahar LMGs are produced at Adani Defence’s integrated small arms facility in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Spread across 100 acres, the facility is India’s first fully integrated private-sector hub for small arms manufacturing, incorporating advanced technologies such as CNC machining, robotics, precision metrology, metallurgy labs, and an underground firing range.

Each weapon undergoes rigorous lifecycle testing, ballistic assessment, and environmental trials to meet the operational standards required by the Indian Armed Forces. The company stated that these processes ensure reliability and performance across diverse combat conditions.

The Gwalior facility has the capacity to produce up to 100,000 weapons annually, with over 90% of components sourced domestically. This localisation effort not only strengthens India’s defence ecosystem but also supports MSMEs and generates skilled employment within the region.

In addition to small arms production, Adani Defence’s ammunition complex in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, commissioned in 2024, has an annual capacity of around 300 million rounds. The company plans to expand into larger-calibre ammunition and close-quarter battle weapons, further advancing India’s long-term goal of achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
