Aadhaar Database Fully Protected, Multi-Layered Security in Place: Centre
The Centre says Aadhaar data remains secure with multi-layered systems and no breach reported to date.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) reaffirmed on December 17, 2025, that the Aadhaar database maintained by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) remains fully secure, with no breach of cardholders' data reported from the central repository to date. The statement comes amid ongoing public discourse on data privacy, emphasising robust safeguards in place for over 1.3 billion enrolled individuals.
UIDAI employs a multi-layered "defence-in-depth" security architecture, incorporating advanced encryption, restricted access controls, continuous monitoring, and regular vulnerability assessments. The system has earned top international certifications, including ISO standards for information security management, underscoring its adherence to global best practices.
The ministry highlighted proactive measures such as periodic security audits, penetration testing, and real-time threat detection to preempt potential risks. Only minimal demographic and biometric data necessary for authentication is stored, with strict protocols governing access—even UIDAI personnel cannot view full records without authorisation.

Aadhaar's design ensures that biometric data is hashed and encrypted at enrolment, remaining inaccessible in raw form during transactions. Authentication requests are processed without revealing personal details to requesting agencies, maintaining privacy through a "yes/no" response mechanism.
These assurances address occasional concerns raised in media or parliamentary discussions, with the government reiterating that reported "leaks" typically involve unauthorised sharing at local levels rather than central database compromises. As India's foundational digital identity platform continues to underpin services from banking to welfare distribution, UIDAI remains committed to evolving its security framework in line with emerging technological threats.
