78 Indian Seafarers Involved In Maritime Incidents; 3 Dead, 1 Missing

Indian crew hit by maritime incidents; three dead and one missing.

The Government of India on Thursday said that 78 Indian seafarers were affected in recent maritime incidents involving foreign-flagged vessels operating in the Persian Gulf region. Officials confirmed that three Indian crew members were killed and one remains missing, while the majority of those involved escaped without injuries.

Addressing a press conference, Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, said most of the affected seafarers were safe. “Of these vessels, there were 78 Indian seafarers. Of these, 70 are unhurt and escaped. Four sustained injuries over the last few days but are stable. Unfortunately, there have been three casualties and one seafarer is missing,” he said.

Sinha clarified that the incidents involved foreign-flagged vessels carrying Indian crew members and not ships registered under the Indian flag. He added that authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure the safety and welfare of Indian seafarers operating in the region.

Providing an update on Indian-flagged vessels in the Persian Gulf region, the official said their number remains unchanged at 28. Of these, 24 vessels are positioned west of the Strait of Hormuz, carrying a total of 677 Indian seafarers, while four ships are located east of the strategic waterway with 101 Indian crew members onboard.

The government said all Indian vessels and their crew members are being actively monitored amid the heightened security concerns in the region. Officials emphasized that safety protocols and communication channels remain in place to respond quickly to any emerging threats affecting Indian maritime personnel.

The update comes as tensions in the Gulf region have raised concerns about the safety of commercial shipping routes, particularly near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors for global energy supplies. Indian authorities said they remain in close contact with international partners and shipping operators to safeguard seafarers and maritime operations.
