26-Year-Old Simran Bala to Lead All-Male CRPF Contingent on Republic Day 2026

J&K’s Simran Bala becomes first woman to command CRPF unit in historic R-Day march.

In a landmark moment for gender equality in India’s security forces, 26-year-old Assistant Commandant Simran Bala from Jammu and Kashmir is set to make history. She will lead an all-male Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) contingent during the 76th Republic Day parade on January 26, 2026, at Kartavya Path in New Delhi. Commanding over 140 male personnel, Bala becomes the first woman officer in the CRPF to helm such a unit in this prestigious ceremonial march. Hailing from Nowshera in Rajouri district—a border area frequently affected by cross-border shelling—her journey symbolizes resilience and determination forged amid adversity.

Bala’s path to this achievement is inspiring. As the first woman from her district to join the CRPF as an officer, she cleared the UPSC CAPF exam on her first attempt in May 2023, securing an impressive All India Rank of 82 among 151 candidates. While pursuing her political science degree at Government College for Women in Jammu, she balanced academics and rigorous preparation, emerging as the sole woman from Jammu and Kashmir to qualify that year. Her story reflects not just personal grit but also the growing opportunities for women in paramilitary roles.

Speaking to media, Simran Bala expressed profound emotion about the honor. She described the feeling as indescribable—leading the parade with India Gate in view, shouldering the responsibility on the nation’s biggest day. Retired Army Captain Anil Gour praised her feat as a “paradigm shift,” opening doors for women in uniform to shape their destinies. In border districts like Rajouri and Poonch, young girls are now inspired, with many aspiring to follow in her footsteps and serve the country.

As Republic Day approaches, Simran Bala’s story reminds us that courage and perseverance can transform challenges into triumphs, motivating countless others across India.
