24x7 Water Service To Be Introduced In Adyar And Kodambakkam

24x7 water supply to reach Adyar and Kodambakkam zones.

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metro Water) is moving ahead with plans to expand its 24×7 piped drinking water supply system to Adyar and Kodambakkam zones of the city, a project that follows the success of earlier continuous water supply schemes in other localities. The expansion aims to provide uninterrupted access to treated water for residents and reduce reliance on intermittent municipal deliveries.

Officials said a Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been finalised to increase the capacity of the Pallipattu water distribution station (WDS) and bolster the surrounding network to meet round‑the‑clock demand in the Adyar zone, which includes neighbourhoods such as Adyar proper and Thiruvanmiyur. Works tied to this upgrade are scheduled to begin after the conclusion of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with continuous supply expected once the system is ready.

In parallel, Metro Water is preparing a DPR to extend 24×7 services via other WDS systems in the zone, including Velachery, Nandanam and Ekkatuthangal, as part of broader infrastructure strengthening in central and southern parts of the city. The renewed focus on distribution network enhancements reflects ongoing efforts to address pressure imbalances and ensure equitable delivery across residential clusters.

The expansion will also cover Kodambakkam zone, where Metro Water currently operates five separate WDS systems; under the 24×7 scheme, the number of operational stations is expected to be streamlined to three, optimising water management and reducing operational complexity. Local residents’ associations have already been consulted as part of the planning process to incorporate community feedback into the design phases of the DPR.

Metro Water officials noted that control boxes will be installed on every street within the affected zones to monitor supply continuity in real time and alert technicians to disruptions, helping to improve responsiveness and service quality once the scheme is in place.

The proposed expansion comes amid a series of major water infrastructure investments in Chennai, including contracts awarded to private firms for modern 24×7 systems and state government initiatives to upgrade treatment capacity — part of a broader strategy to strengthen water security for the rapidly growing metropolis.
