215 Academics Demand Accountability Over Priyanka Gandhi's Alleged IIT Professor Remark
Academics seek clarification over controversial remark.
An open letter signed by 215 vice chancellors, former vice chancellors and academics has criticised Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over her remarks about IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti during a debate in Parliament. The signatories said her reported description of the noted academic as a "gaumutra expert" undermined the credentials of a distinguished scientist and risked discouraging scholars from participating in public discourse.
In the three-page letter, the academics expressed disappointment over what they described as a dismissive characterisation of Professor Kamakoti. "We write to express our disappointment over your reported remark describing IIT Madras Director Professor V. Kamakoti as a 'gaumutra expert'. Whether intended as sarcasm or political rhetoric, such a characterization raises concerns that go far beyond one individual," the letter stated. It added that disagreement with a scholar's views should be addressed through evidence and debate rather than personal labels.
The letter highlighted Professor Kamakoti's academic and professional achievements, noting that he holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Madras. According to the signatories, he has authored more than 150 research papers, contributed to over 50 research and development projects, and received honours including the DRDO Academic Excellence Award and the Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association's Techno Visionary Award. The letter also credited him with playing a key role in the development of India's first industry-grade microprocessor.

The academics argued that history has shown scientific knowledge evolves over time and that ideas once considered implausible have later received scientific validation. They said public debate should focus on examining evidence and arguments rather than questioning an individual's academic standing. The letter warned that dismissive remarks directed at researchers could discourage scientists and educators from contributing to discussions on matters of national importance.
The controversy stems from Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's speech during the Lok Sabha debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. Although she did not explicitly name Professor Kamakoti, her comments were widely interpreted as referring to the IIT Madras Director, who is a member of the government's newly constituted task force on examination reforms. The issue has since sparked debate over political rhetoric and the treatment of academics participating in public policy discussions.
