IIT Madras Director's Career Comes Under Focus After Priyanka's Remark

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s remarks describing a member of the government’s education reform panel as a “Gaumutra expert” during a Lok Sabha debate have triggered a political controversy, with the comment drawing criticism from ruling party members and sparking discussions over academic credentials and public statements.

The remark was made during Priyanka Gandhi’s speech on The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, while she questioned the government’s approach to education reforms and the composition of a panel formed to review issues related to the National Testing Agency (NTA). Although she did not name any individual, the comment was widely interpreted as referring to Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras and one of the experts appointed to the multidisciplinary committee.

Members of the ruling party objected to the statement, arguing that it targeted a respected academic and scientist. The reference was linked to comments made by Prof. Kamakoti at a public event where he discussed the traditional knowledge system and the possible uses of cow urine in the context of indigenous practices and organic farming. Critics of Priyanka Gandhi’s remark said that highlighting one such statement overlooked his broader academic and scientific contributions.

Prof. V. Kamakoti is a computer scientist who completed his master’s and doctoral studies in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Madras before joining the institute’s faculty in 2001. He became the Director of IIT Madras in January 2022 and has worked extensively in areas including computer architecture, information security, and VLSI design.

Kamakoti has been associated with several technology and national initiatives, including leading the Microprocessor Development Programme and the Information Security Education and Awareness Programme at IIT Madras. He has also served on the National Security Advisory Board and chaired the Artificial Intelligence Task Force constituted by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. His research work includes more than 150 publications, supervision of doctoral scholars, and leadership of several government and industry-funded projects.

BJP leaders criticised Priyanka Gandhi’s remarks, stating that they reduced the achievements of a prominent scientist to a single controversial issue. The controversy has since become part of a wider political debate over the role of public representatives, scientific expertise, and discussions surrounding traditional knowledge in policy-making.
