1992 Batch IAS Officer Chanchal Kumar Appointed I&B Secretary as Sanjay Jaju Moved to DoNER
The centre appoints Chanchal Kumar as I&B secretary in a sweeping IAS reshuffle amid West Asian tensions.
In a significant bureaucratic reshuffle, the Centre has appointed Chanchal Kumar, a 1992-batch Bihar Cadre IAS Officer, as the new Information and Broadcasting Secretary. The move was announced through an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Tuesday. The current secretary, Sanjay Jaju, has been reassigned as secretary in the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region.
Kumar, who is presently serving as secretary in the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region, will take over his new role as part of the latest administrative changes. The reshuffle comes at a crucial time when the government is strengthening its institutional response to global developments, particularly the ongoing West Asia conflict and its potential implications.
Alongside this appointment, the government has constituted seven empowered groups of secretaries tasked with preparing strategic responses to emerging challenges linked to the geopolitical situation. These groups are expected to assess risks and coordinate policy measures across sectors to mitigate the impact of international developments on India’s economy and governance.

The reshuffle also includes postings of several 1995-batch IAS officers who were recently empanelled as secretaries. Among them, Rohit Kansal, an AGMUT cadre officer, has been appointed as Rural Development Secretary following the retirement of Shailesh Kumar Singh. The changes reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to streamline administrative leadership across key ministries.
