West Bank violence escalates after deadly clashes.
Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda on Friday penned an emotional tribute to his late wife Chennamma, expressing gratitude to the people of Karnataka for the affection, support, and condolences extended to his family after her death. Chennamma passed away on July 18, bringing an end to a 72-year-long marriage with the veteran political leader.
In his heartfelt statement, Deve Gowda said he was deeply moved by the overwhelming support received from people across the state during the period of grief. Remembering his wife’s lifelong companionship, he said she stood beside him through every stage of his journey, from his early political career as a legislator to his roles as Chief Minister of Karnataka and Prime Minister of India.
Reflecting on their decades together, Deve Gowda said the recognition and achievements he received in public life were made possible because of Chennamma’s constant support and sacrifices. He described her as the source of strength behind his success and compared her selfless nature to sandalwood that spreads fragrance while giving itself away.

The former Prime Minister highlighted Chennamma’s simplicity, spiritual nature, and commitment to family values. He said she remained humble despite being the wife of a former Prime Minister and ensured that political prominence never affected her kindness, compassion, or approach towards people. He described her as a symbol of affection, motherhood, and traditional values.
Deve Gowda also thanked several dignitaries and members of the public who paid their respects, including Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Union Ministers, former Chief Ministers, religious leaders, legislators, media representatives, police officials, and people from different sections of society.
He specifically expressed gratitude to residents of Hassan district, where Chennamma was widely respected and regarded as a motherly figure. Deve Gowda said words of thanks were insufficient to acknowledge the support his family received during the difficult period. Chennamma was laid to rest at Mavinakere in Holenarasipura taluk of Hassan district. Deve Gowda said he and his late wife would remain forever grateful to the people for standing with them and offering strength during their time of personal loss.
