Vande Bharat Food Complaint Leads To ₹10 Lakh Fine For IRCTC, ₹50 Lakh For Service Provider
IRCTC fined ₹10 lakh over Vande Bharat passenger food complaint.
The Indian Railways has imposed a total fine of ₹60 lakh following a passenger complaint about food quality on the Patna-Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express on March 15. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) was fined ₹10 lakh, while the service provider responsible for the meal supply was penalized ₹50 lakh, with its contract terminated.
An Indian Railways spokesperson emphasized that passenger safety and quality remain top priorities. The ministry noted that Indian Railways serves nearly 58 crore meals annually, and complaints account for only 0.0008% of this total, including instances of overcharging. Over the past three years, fines totaling ₹2.6 crore have been imposed following investigations into passenger grievances.
In addition to food-related issues, Indian Railways reported three incidents of passenger assault by Pantry Car staff in 2025. Legal action was taken against the involved employees by the respective Government Railway Police, reflecting ongoing efforts to ensure passenger safety and accountability.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that five new reforms have been approved under the ongoing “Reform Express” initiative, bringing the total number of reforms for 2026 to nine. These reforms cover areas including cargo, construction, and passenger convenience.
One of the highlighted reforms focuses on salt transportation. India produces nearly 35 million tonnes of salt annually, with major contributions from Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. Of this total, approximately 9.2 million tonnes are transported by rail, representing a significant opportunity to optimize logistics and expand rail-based commerce.
The recent fines and the reform initiatives underscore Indian Railways’ commitment to improving service standards, enhancing passenger safety, and modernizing operations while addressing both operational and commercial opportunities.
