US Treasury Confirms Expiry Of Iranian Oil Waiver, No Renewal Planned
US confirms expiry of Iranian oil waiver, warning financial institutions ahead of renewed sanctions enforcement.
The United States Treasury Department has announced that a temporary sanctions waiver permitting the sale and delivery of stranded Iranian oil at sea will expire in the coming days and will not be renewed, marking a renewed tightening of economic pressure on Tehran amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
The waiver had originally allowed the shipment of Iranian crude oil and petroleum products loaded before March 20 to be delivered and sold through April 19. The exemption was introduced as part of earlier measures aimed at managing global energy supply disruptions following the outbreak of conflict involving Iran in late February.
In its statement posted on social media platform X, the Treasury Department warned financial institutions that the United States is prepared to impose secondary sanctions on foreign entities continuing to support Iran’s oil-related activities. Officials described the move as part of a broader “maximum pressure” strategy intended to restrict Tehran’s revenue sources.

The policy shift comes amid continued volatility in global energy markets, with the Persian Gulf region supplying a significant share of global crude demand. The waiver had previously been seen as a limited relief measure aimed at stabilising supply chains and easing price pressures triggered by regional conflict and sanctions enforcement.
Reports also suggest that Iranian oil shipments have recently begun to reach international waters, with sanctioned tankers carrying crude reportedly anchoring near Indian ports. India, which has largely avoided Iranian oil since 2019 due to sanctions, has indicated openness to diversifying its crude imports amid global supply uncertainty.
Meanwhile, broader diplomatic efforts remain ongoing, with discussions reportedly underway for another round of negotiations aimed at stabilising the situation and extending a fragile ceasefire. However, uncertainty continues to surround both energy flows and diplomatic progress as sanctions enforcement and geopolitical tensions intensify.
