US Immigration Detention Sees Four Deaths in Early 2026

At least four migrants die in ICE detention in first days of 2026.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has reported the deaths of at least four individuals in its custody during the first ten days of 2026, raising immediate concerns about conditions in immigration detention facilities. The fatalities, all involving men aged between 42 and 68, include nationals from Honduras, Cuba, and Cambodia. Two deaths were attributed to heart-related health issues, while the causes for the other two remain unspecified, with only one case officially listed as under investigation.

These early 2026 deaths follow a record-breaking year in 2025, when at least 30 people perished while held in ICE detention centres—the highest annual toll since the agency’s establishment in 2003. The 2025 figure exceeds the total number of deaths recorded throughout the entire Biden administration from 2021 to 2025, during which 26 fatalities occurred according to data compiled by the American Immigration Lawyers Association from official ICE reports.

The spike in custody deaths has intensified scrutiny over medical care provided to detainees. A 2024 American Civil Liberties Union report, based on an analysis of thousands of documents obtained through public records requests, concluded that up to 95 percent of deaths in ICE detention between 2017 and 2021 could have been prevented with timely and appropriate medical intervention.

Medical experts reviewing the records identified patterns of incorrect treatment, inappropriate care, and significant delays in providing necessary medical attention to detainees. These findings have prompted renewed calls for improved oversight and healthcare standards within immigration detention facilities amid the recent surge in fatalities.

ICE has not provided a response to requests for comment on the latest deaths or broader concerns regarding detainee medical treatment. The rapid succession of fatalities in early 2026, combined with the unprecedented toll in 2025, underscores persistent challenges in ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals held in federal immigration custody under the current administration.
