Ukraine Air Force Reports Large-Scale Russian Drone And Missile Attack On Kyiv

Ukraine reports major Russian drone and missile attack amid escalation warnings.

Russian forces carried out a large-scale overnight assault on Ukraine, firing more than 100 drones and two ballistic missiles, according to the Ukrainian air force on Tuesday. The renewed wave of strikes comes amid heightened warnings from Moscow that Kyiv could face intensified attacks in the coming days. Ukrainian officials, however, said the security situation in the capital remains consistent with previous months despite what they described as attempts by Russia to create panic.

The escalation follows a Russian advisory urging foreign nationals, including diplomatic staff, to leave Kyiv and avoid areas near military and government installations. Moscow has claimed that “systemic strikes” on the Ukrainian capital are being prepared. However, no foreign missions have announced evacuations, with the European Union, France, and Poland confirming that their diplomatic presence in Kyiv will continue. European officials accused Russia of attempting to spread fear rather than reflecting any new battlefield reality.

The European Union has formally raised concerns with Russia’s representative in Brussels, with officials describing the warning as an attempt to “sow panic.” French diplomatic authorities also dismissed the statements as “intimidation,” while Ukraine’s foreign ministry said the level of threat to Kyiv has not significantly changed compared to recent months. It added that Ukraine is ready to support foreign missions with additional security arrangements if required.

Russian officials have suggested that future strikes could target underground military infrastructure rather than Ukraine’s political leadership. Andrei Kartapolov, head of the defence committee in Russia’s State Duma, said that potential targets may include fortified bunkers used by Ukraine’s armed forces and security agencies. His comments come after Russia claimed that its recent large-scale missile attack was in response to a Ukrainian drone strike in the occupied Luhansk region, which Moscow said targeted civilian infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the country continues to face shortages of advanced air defence systems needed to intercept ballistic missiles, particularly amid global demand pressures linked to other conflicts. He noted that Ukraine is working with European partners to strengthen its defensive capabilities while acknowledging delays in expanding missile defence production with the United States. Despite these challenges, Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces have managed to stabilise the long front line in eastern and southern regions.

Military analysts, including the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War, suggested that Russia’s intensified rhetoric and warning of major strikes may be aimed at shaping public perception rather than reflecting decisive battlefield gains. The think tank noted that Ukrainian drone operations have disrupted Russian supply lines and contributed to slowing Moscow’s spring offensive. As both sides continue long-range strikes and information warfare, the conflict remains locked in a cycle of escalation with no immediate signs of de-escalation or diplomatic breakthrough.
