UK Navy Drones Contained China-Linked Cameras, Triggering Fresh Fears Over Military Security

China-linked cameras fitted to surveillance drones used by Britain's Royal Navy have raised national security concerns after an investigation reportedly found that the devices were transmitting "heartbeat communications" to an internet address in China. The cameras were installed on K3 Scout drones operated by the Royal Marines and supplied to British defence contractor Kraken Technology Group by a third-party manufacturer. The discovery has prompted the Ministry of Defence to take steps to prevent the cameras from accessing the internet. The £12 million fleet of K3 Scout surveillance drones has been used by the Royal Marines since March, according to reports.

The drones have reportedly been deployed in proximity to sensitive security meetings, raising concerns about whether information could have been exposed through the cameras or their communications systems. The cameras were reportedly supplied to Kraken Technology Group with assurances that they were secure. An investigation into the equipment found that the cameras continued transmitting what are known as "heartbeat communications" to an IP address based in China. Such signals are generally used by connected devices to indicate that they remain online and operational. However, the discovery of communications between equipment used by the British military and an address in China has raised questions about the security of the components and the risks posed by third-party technology within defence systems.

The cameras reportedly continued to maintain connectivity even after the drones had been shut down, according to the report. Their ability to remain active or communicate after the aircraft were switched off heightened concerns among officials and security specialists. The Ministry of Defence subsequently removed internet connectivity from the cameras, limiting their ability to communicate externally while the issue was examined. The incident has renewed concerns in Britain over the security of Chinese-linked technology within critical defence and government supply chains. Western governments have increasingly scrutinised equipment manufactured or supplied through Chinese companies over fears that connected components could create vulnerabilities or provide opportunities for unauthorised access.

The discovery involving the Royal Navy drones is particularly sensitive because of the systems' use in military operations and their reported proximity to high-security discussions. The cameras were not directly supplied by the British defence contractor's own manufacturing operation but were obtained from a third-party supplier. Kraken Technology Group had reportedly been assured that the equipment was secure before it was incorporated into the drones. The episode highlights the challenges defence companies face when integrating commercially available or externally sourced components into sophisticated military platforms.

The reported transmission of data to a Chinese IP address does not by itself establish that sensitive information was successfully accessed or transferred to Chinese authorities. "Heartbeat" communications can be routine technical signals used to monitor the status of connected equipment. However, the presence of such communications on military equipment has prompted scrutiny because of the potential security implications and the need to establish exactly what information, if any, was transmitted. The Ministry of Defence's decision to remove the cameras' internet connectivity is intended to reduce that potential risk while investigations continue.

Officials are expected to examine the cameras' software, communications architecture and supply-chain history to determine how the connection was established and whether any sensitive information could have been exposed. The incident is likely to intensify debate in Britain over the use of foreign-made components in military equipment and the need for rigorous security checks throughout defence supply chains. As military systems increasingly rely on networked cameras, sensors and other connected technologies, even seemingly minor components can create potential vulnerabilities if their communications capabilities are not fully understood or controlled.
