Typhoon Wipha Wreaks Havoc in Hong Kong

Hong Kong faces chaos as Typhoon Wipha triggers top storm alerts, flight cancellations, and regional devastation.

Hong Kong raised its storm warning to Signal No. 10 as Typhoon Wipha approached, prompting Cathay Pacific to cancel or delay flights to and from Hong Kong International Airport from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The Hong Kong Observatory issued the alert at 9:20 a.m., with Wipha’s 118 km/h winds passing 50 km south of the city. This is the first No. 10 signal since Typhoon Saola’s flooding in September 2023.

The Airport Authority activated its emergency center, and the Education Bureau canceled all school events. Macau planned to raise its No. 10 signal by 12:30 p.m., though major hotels remained open. Hong Kong’s stock exchange stayed operational, having ended its storm closure policy last year.

In Vietnam, Wipha caused 38 deaths in a Halong Bay boat capsizing, with flights canceled as the storm hit northern provinces. In the Philippines, Luzon faced up to 200 mm of rain through Tuesday, with three dead, three missing, and over 370,000 affected.
