Tharoor Defies Congress, Backs Modi in Explosive National Unity Plea
Shashi Tharoor prioritizes nation over party amid Congress rift.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has sparked controversy within his party by staunchly defending his support for the government’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, emphasizing national unity over party loyalty. Speaking at a Kochi event, Tharoor responded to a student’s question about his strained ties with Congress leadership, saying, “The nation comes first. Parties are a means to make India better.”
Tharoor’s remarks, advocating cross-party cooperation on national security, drew ire from Congress leaders after he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of the crisis. The Congress initially supported the government but later questioned the ceasefire and U.S. involvement, clashing with Tharoor’s stance. His role leading an Indian delegation for global outreach post-Operation Sindoor further widened the rift.
“Many have criticized me, but I’ll stand my ground because it’s right for India,” Tharoor declared, urging all 46 parties in Parliament to unite for a safer India. Quoting Jawaharlal Nehru—“Who lives if India dies?”—he took a subtle swipe at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who had jabbed, “For Congress, it’s country first, but for some, it’s Modi first.”

Tharoor’s X post, “Don’t ask permission to fly. The wings are yours,” underscored his defiance. His call for multi-partisan unity has ignited debate, positioning him as a polarizing figure within Congress.
