Shashi Tharoor Illuminates India’s Democratic Legacy and Future in UK Lectures

Shashi Tharoor’s UK lectures, hosted by JGU, highlighted India’s civilizational heritage and democratic future.

Dr. Shashi Tharoor, renowned Indian parliamentarian and author, captivated audiences in the United Kingdom with a series of thought-provoking lectures on India’s civilizational heritage, constitutional democracy, and its trajectory toward 2047. Organized by O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU), India’s premier private university and an Institution of Eminence, the events took place at University College and Somerville College, Oxford, and the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple in London.

Lessons from India’s Ancient Wisdom

At University College, Oxford, Dr. Tharoor delivered a stirring lecture titled An Immemorial Civilization: Lessons from India, Lessons for India. He traced India’s 2,500-year history, highlighting its enduring values of religious tolerance, non-violence, and social justice. Drawing from historical figures like Emperor Ashoka and modern icons like Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi, he emphasized India’s ethos of acceptance over mere tolerance. “India’s civilization teaches the world to embrace diverse truths,” Tharoor said, quoting Vivekananda: “Hinduism taught the world not just tolerance, but acceptance.” He urged India to reimagine itself by confronting modern inequities with the moral clarity of its ancient wisdom, ensuring justice for the marginalized.

Celebrating 75 Years of the Indian Constitution

At Somerville College, Oxford, Dr. Tharoor’s lecture, Indian Constitution at 75: Protecting Rights, Expanding Freedoms & Empowering Citizens, celebrated the Indian Constitution as a unifying social contract. “This document is more than a legal framework; it binds our diverse nation together,” he remarked. Reflecting on its 75-year journey, he called for renewed commitment to safeguarding the rights and freedoms it guarantees for every citizen.

Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, JGU’s Founding Vice Chancellor, introduced Tharoor and underscored the role of universities in fostering global dialogue on democracy and sustainability. “Dr. Tharoor’s insights inspire us to protect and renew democratic values across generations,” Kumar said, praising Tharoor as a beacon of India’s democratic process.

At the Inner Temple in London, Dr. Tharoor’s lecture, India at 2047: The Future of the World’s Largest Democracy, offered a forward-looking perspective on India’s democratic resilience and challenges. “India’s journey is remarkable, but its institutions must be backed by the spirit of democracy,” he said, commending JGU for sparking global conversations on these themes.
