Turkey Targets Netanyahu With Arrest Warrant Over Gaza Aid Flotilla Interception Case

Turkey Seeks Arrest Warrant Netanyahu

Turkey has sought an international arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of “genocide” in connection with Israel’s interception of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced Friday. The development adds another legal dimension to the growing dispute between Turkey and Israel over the war in Gaza and Israel’s treatment of humanitarian missions attempting to reach the Palestinian territory. Gurlek said Turkey’s Justice Ministry had asked the Interior Ministry to issue an Interpol red notice for Netanyahu and another Israeli national, Afek Moskovitch. Turkey has become one of Israel’s most vocal critics since the Gaza war began following Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly accused Netanyahu of committing “genocide” against Palestinians in Gaza and has called for international accountability over Israel’s military campaign. Ankara has also taken a series of diplomatic and legal positions against Israel as the conflict has continued, placing the country among the strongest international opponents of the Israeli government’s policies in Gaza. The latest Turkish action is linked to Israel’s interception of a Gaza-bound flotilla in May. The flotilla was carrying around 430 activists and was attempting to reach Gaza with humanitarian aid when it was stopped by Israeli authorities. The interception prompted an international outcry and renewed criticism over restrictions on humanitarian access to Gaza. The incident also attracted legal attention in several countries, with France, Italy and Australia reportedly launching judicial proceedings connected to the interception and those involved.

Gurlek said on X that his ministry had requested action through Turkey’s Interior Ministry against Netanyahu and Moskovitch. The request for an Interpol red notice is significant because such notices are circulated internationally to seek the location and provisional arrest of individuals wanted by a requesting country, subject to the laws of the country where the person is located. However, an Interpol red notice is not itself an international arrest warrant and does not automatically require member countries to arrest the person named in it. Any subsequent action would depend on domestic legal procedures and the applicable rules in the country concerned.

The Turkish move comes against the backdrop of increasing international legal scrutiny surrounding Israel’s conduct during the Gaza conflict. Governments, international organisations and courts have faced mounting pressure to examine allegations of violations of international humanitarian law. Turkey has consistently argued that Israeli officials should be held accountable for alleged crimes against Palestinians and has strongly supported international efforts aimed at securing Palestinian rights. Israel has rejected accusations of genocide and has maintained that its military campaign is directed against Hamas following the October 7 attacks, rather than against the Palestinian population as a whole.

The flotilla case could further strain already deteriorating relations between Ankara and Jerusalem. Turkey has sharply intensified its criticism of Netanyahu and his government since the Gaza war began, while diplomatic relations between the two countries have been severely affected by disagreements over the conflict. The legal action also highlights the wider international consequences of incidents involving humanitarian missions attempting to reach Gaza. With judicial proceedings reportedly underway in multiple countries, the Turkish request could contribute to increased legal and diplomatic pressure on Israeli officials linked to the flotilla interception. The case is therefore likely to remain part of the broader international debate over accountability, humanitarian access and the conduct of the Gaza war.
