Israel Signals Turkey After Syria Attack As Netanyahu Declares Message Was Clear

Netanyahu Says Israel Sent Turkey Warning.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that Israel had delivered a clear warning to Turkey against establishing a military presence at an airfield in Syria, appearing to acknowledge Israeli involvement in a strike on the site a day earlier. Netanyahu said Israel had initially communicated its opposition in general terms but acted more forcefully after concluding that the warning had not been understood. “We will not tolerate a Turkish military entrenchment moving southward, because it threatens us,” Netanyahu said during an interview on an army radio podcast. He added that Israel had first sent a message opposing a Turkish military presence at an airfield near Aleppo, close to the Turkish border.

“Apparently they didn't hear it, so we made sure they understood it more clearly,” he said. Netanyahu's comments came a day after a strike targeted the Syrian airfield. His office had stopped short of explicitly claiming responsibility for the attack but said Turkish forces had recently visited the facility. The Israeli government also warned that it would not accept what it considered a potential threat arising from a Turkish military presence in Syria. The remarks represent a significant escalation in rhetoric between Israel and Turkey over military activity in Syria. Turkey has sought to maintain influence and security interests in neighbouring Syria, while Israel has repeatedly expressed concern about military forces operating close to its borders.

Any expansion of Turkish military infrastructure in northern Syria could therefore become a sensitive issue for Israel, particularly if Jerusalem believes it could affect its freedom of military operations or create a new security challenge. US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack, who also serves as Washington's point person on Syria, directly blamed Israel for the strike and condemned the attack. His comments added an international dimension to the dispute, highlighting the competing security interests of Israel, Turkey and the United States in Syria. The incident comes as Syria continues to navigate a complex security environment involving multiple regional and international actors.

The country has experienced years of conflict, leaving areas under the influence of different armed groups and foreign powers. Turkey has maintained a significant security presence in parts of northern Syria, while Israel has carried out military operations in Syria over concerns about threats and the movement or establishment of hostile forces and weapons. Netanyahu's remarks suggest that Israel views any potential Turkish military expansion farther south as a security issue that requires direct action. His statement also appeared designed to make clear that Israel's opposition was not limited to diplomatic warnings. However, the exact circumstances of the strike, including its target, extent of damage and the broader military implications, were not detailed in Netanyahu's comments.

The episode risks adding another point of tension between Israel and Turkey, whose relations have already been strained by disagreements over regional security and the conflict involving Gaza. Washington's involvement further underscores the sensitivity of the issue, as the United States maintains relationships with both countries while seeking to manage competing interests in Syria. Netanyahu's acknowledgement that Israel had sent a warning before the strike provides the clearest indication yet of Jerusalem's position on the reported Turkish military plans at the Syrian airfield. With Turkey continuing to pursue its security interests in Syria and Israel warning against what it considers military entrenchment near its strategic area of concern, the episode could become another source of regional friction in an already volatile environment.
