Trump Says US Could Seize Kharg Island, Reimpose Hormuz Blockade On Iran

Trump issues fresh threats targeting Iran's key energy routes.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned of possible new military and economic measures against Iran, saying Washington could consider taking control of Kharg Island, the country's principal oil export terminal, if tensions between the two nations continue to escalate. The remarks came amid heightened concerns over security in the Gulf region and the potential impact on global energy supplies.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said the United States could also reimpose a blockade aimed specifically at restricting Iranian maritime activity while allowing commercial shipping from other countries to continue. He alleged that Iran could attempt to disrupt shipping through the use of naval mines but claimed that U.S. operations were targeting the small vessels that could be used for such activities. His comments suggested that Washington remains prepared to increase pressure on Tehran through both military and economic means.

Trump also referred to Iran's critical infrastructure, stating that while he would prefer not to target desalination plants, such action could become necessary depending on developments. The comments marked another sharp warning as the United States continues to signal that multiple response options remain under consideration if the regional security situation deteriorates further.

On the diplomatic front, the U.S. President said Special Envoy Steve Witkoff could still engage in discussions with Iranian officials, although he expressed limited optimism about the prospects for immediate negotiations. Trump also accused Tehran of using a temporary pause in hostilities following recent funeral ceremonies to launch fresh attacks, alleging that Iran resumed missile strikes after requesting time for the observances.

The latest remarks come against the backdrop of rising tensions in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important maritime route through which a significant share of the world's oil shipments passes. Any disruption in the region has the potential to affect global energy markets, prompting close monitoring by governments and shipping companies.

While Trump outlined several possible measures, there has been no official confirmation of any decision to seize Kharg Island or implement a new blockade against Iran. The statements are likely to draw international attention as governments assess their implications for regional stability, global trade and ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation in the Middle East.
