Trump Says 'Things Wouldn't Be Good' If Iran Disrespects United States Again

Trump warns Iran against actions he deems disrespectful.

US President Donald Trump has signalled that military action against Iran remains a possibility, warning that the future of the fragile ceasefire and broader engagement between the two countries will depend on Tehran's behaviour. Speaking to reporters during an appearance in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump said relations could remain stable only if Iran continued to respect the terms of ongoing understandings.

“As long as they respect us, we're gonna be fine. If they don't respect us, things wouldn't be good,” Trump said when asked about the prospects of renewed conflict. His remarks came amid continued scrutiny of the memorandum of understanding signed between Washington and Tehran earlier this month, which was intended to reduce tensions following a period of heightened confrontation.

When questioned about whether he would risk potential economic consequences by authorising another strike on Iran, Trump argued that concerns over nuclear weapons outweighed economic considerations. He said the threat posed by a nuclear-armed Iran would be far more severe than any economic downturn, maintaining that national security considerations would remain his top priority.

Trump also pushed back against suggestions that he had softened his position on Iran despite pursuing diplomatic engagement. Referring to previous comments about the economic impact of military action, he clarified that he had said such actions “could” lead to a depression, not that they necessarily would. He again referenced former US President Herbert Hoover, whom he has frequently cited in discussions about balancing economic stability with foreign policy decisions.

The president appeared visibly dismissive when asked whether Iran's economic difficulties had strengthened its negotiating position in talks with the United States. Rejecting the premise of the question, Trump argued that Iran had suffered significant damage and suggested that its economic condition did not provide meaningful leverage in ongoing discussions.

Trump's latest comments underscore the uncertainty surrounding US-Iran relations despite recent diplomatic efforts. While the memorandum of understanding has provided a framework for dialogue, questions remain over compliance, regional security concerns and the long-term durability of any agreement between the two countries.
