Trump Says "It Will Be Done" on Removing Russian Influence From Greenland Via Tariffs

Trump criticises Denmark for failing to address the Russian threat in Greenland, vowing US action and tariffs on Europe until ownership is granted.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday renewed his aggressive push to take control of Greenland, claiming Denmark has failed for years to counter what he described as a growing “Russian threat” to the strategically located Arctic territory.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said NATO had repeatedly urged Denmark over the past two decades to neutralise security risks in Greenland but accused Copenhagen of inaction. “Now it is time, and it will be done!!!” Trump wrote, signalling continued pressure from Washington.

The White House, Denmark’s foreign ministry and the Danish presidency of the European Union did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters. Leaders in both Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected Trump’s claims, stressing that the autonomous territory is not for sale and does not wish to become part of the United States.

Trump has repeatedly insisted he will accept nothing short of US ownership of Greenland, arguing that the island’s location makes it critical to American national security. He has cited increased Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic as justification for his stance.

On Saturday, Trump escalated the dispute by vowing to impose a fresh wave of tariffs on European allies until the United States is allowed to buy Greenland, a move that has alarmed European capitals and raised fears of a broader trade conflict. European officials have countered Trump’s arguments by pointing out that Greenland already falls under NATO’s collective defence framework, insisting that existing security arrangements are sufficient and warning that unilateral pressure could strain transatlantic ties.
