Noida Authority Sacks Junior Engineer, Issues Notices After 27-Year-Old Techie’s Pit Death

Noida Authority terminates junior engineer Naveen Kumar and issues show-cause notices after 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta’s car plunges into an unmarked 20-ft water-filled pit.

The Noida Authority on Sunday took strict action following the death of a 27-year-old software engineer whose car plunged into a water-filled pit at a construction site in Sector 150, terminating the services of a junior engineer and issuing show-cause notices to other officials responsible for traffic-related works in the area.

In an official statement issued late Sunday night, the authority said its Chief Executive Officer, Lokesh M, ordered the immediate termination of Naveen Kumar, a junior engineer with the Noida Traffic Cell. The CEO also directed that show-cause notices be served to other officers and employees linked to traffic management and safety arrangements around the accident site.

The authority further said it has sought detailed reports from concerned departments regarding the allotment and construction activities of the developer, Lotus, and ordered a comprehensive review of safety measures at the site. Emphasising zero tolerance for negligence, the Noida Authority instructed all departments to reinspect safety protocols at ongoing construction projects across their jurisdictions to prevent similar incidents.

The action follows the death of Yuvraj Mehta, a resident of Tata Eureka Park society, whose car fell into a more than 20-foot-deep pit dug for the basement of an under-construction building in the early hours of Saturday. Police said Mehta, who worked with a Gurugram-based company, was returning home from work when the accident occurred amid dense fog conditions.

His body was recovered after a prolonged search operation involving teams from the fire department, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police. An eyewitness, a delivery agent, alleged delays in rescue efforts and claimed the victim might have survived had action been taken sooner. Residents also protested, citing poor barricading and the absence of reflectors at the site.

Police have registered an FIR against two real estate developers on a complaint filed by the victim’s family while denying allegations of negligence in the rescue operation. Following public protests, the Noida Authority has since installed barricades at the accident spot and said further accountability will be fixed after detailed enquiries.
