Trump Links Strait Of Hormuz Control To Payment Amid Iran Tensions

Trump comments on Hormuz amid rising Iran tensions.

US President Donald Trump on Monday said the United States could take control of operations around the Strait of Hormuz and be compensated for securing the strategically important maritime route. His remarks came amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran following recent US military actions targeting Iranian positions.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said the United States would “probably run the Strait” and act as its guardian, arguing that Washington should receive payment for protecting the vital shipping corridor. He said that if the US takes responsibility for securing the waterway, it should be reimbursed for the role.

Trump also claimed that Iran had been significantly weakened following the latest US strikes and said Tehran had not gained any advantage from his administration. He asserted that Iran had limited ability to rebuild its military capabilities, while continuing to criticise the country’s leadership over its regional policies.

While maintaining a tough stance on Iran, Trump also acknowledged the negotiating abilities of Iranian officials, describing them as experienced negotiators. However, he said Iran had failed to obtain concessions from the United States during his administration and suggested that Washington remained in a stronger position.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. A significant share of global oil supplies passes through the narrow waterway, making its security a major concern for international energy markets and maritime trade. Trump’s comments come as tensions between the US and Iran remain elevated, raising questions over the future security arrangements for the region. Any disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could have wider consequences for global oil prices, energy supplies, and geopolitical stability.
