Trump Compares Himself to Lincoln When Asked Why Threats Keep Targeting Him
Trump invokes Lincoln when asked why threats keep targeting him – the third incident in three years.
Donald Trump drew attention for an unusual response after being asked why repeated threats and violent incidents seem to surround him following a shooting disruption at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. Speaking after being evacuated from the Washington Hilton, Trump compared himself to impactful historical leaders and referenced Abraham Lincoln while addressing reporters.
During the media interaction, Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy asked Trump why such incidents keep happening to him. Trump replied that he had studied assassinations and said people who make the biggest impact are often the ones targeted. Referencing Lincoln, he suggested that transformative leaders attract strong opposition and implied that his own political influence may explain repeated threats against him.
The remarks came after a chaotic security scare during the dinner, where gunfire reportedly broke out near a checkpoint while the event was underway. Secret Service agents quickly moved Trump and other senior officials to safety, while law enforcement subdued and arrested the suspect. Authorities said one Secret Service officer was injured but survived due to protective gear. The shooting prompted a temporary lockdown and evacuation of parts of the venue.

Trump also commented on how he handles living under persistent security risks. He said he tries to lead a normal life despite the dangers and insisted he has not become overly fearful or emotionally broken by such threats. The President’s tone mixed confidence with defiance, continuing a style that has long characterised his public reactions to crises.
The dinner had been expected to mark Trump’s first attendance at the event since 2015. During his earlier term in office, he regularly skipped the correspondents’ dinner, often criticising mainstream media outlets. His appearance this year was therefore politically notable even before the security incident overshadowed the occasion.
Saturday’s episode follows several previous threats referenced in reports, including the 2024 Pennsylvania rally shooting, a later arrest near Trump’s Florida golf course, and another armed intrusion at Mar-a-Lago. Together, those incidents have intensified debate over presidential security, political extremism, and the increasingly volatile climate surrounding major US political figures.
