PM Modi Attacks TMC in Bengal: "Ma Crying, Maati With Infiltrators, Maanush Scared"

PM Modi criticises TMC's women safety record using the party's own Ma Mati Manush slogan.

Narendra Modi intensified the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign in West Bengal on Saturday, sharply attacking the ruling Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress ahead of the second phase of Assembly polling. Addressing a rally, Modi said the party had betrayed its long-standing slogan “Ma Mati Manush,” using the phrase to accuse the state government of failing on women’s safety, governance, and public confidence.

In one of the strongest rhetorical moments of the speech, Modi said “‘Ma’ is crying, ‘Maati’ is with infiltrators, and ‘Maanush’ is scared,” seeking to turn TMC’s own political slogan against it. He alleged that West Bengal had declined under 15 years of Trinamool rule and claimed the state was witnessing repeated incidents of violence and insecurity. The BJP has increasingly centered its Bengal campaign on law and order, border concerns, and anti-incumbency sentiment.

The Prime Minister specifically cited several high-profile cases involving alleged crimes against women, including incidents linked to hospitals, colleges, and public spaces. He argued that Bengal, once seen as a leader in women’s empowerment, had been brought to a low point. Modi also alleged that influential ruling party figures had been associated with or shielded in some cases, though such claims remain politically contested and are routinely denied by TMC leaders.

The remarks directly target a core support base of Mamata Banerjee, whose government has built strong backing among women through welfare schemes such as Lakshmir Bhandar, Kanyashree, and Rupashree. These programs have significantly expanded financial support, education access, and social security for women across the state, helping TMC retain a durable electoral advantage over multiple election cycles.

The BJP has nevertheless sought to make inroads among women voters since the 2024 national elections, particularly after controversies such as Sandeshkhali gained national attention. Party leaders believe anger over safety concerns and local governance could weaken TMC’s hold in some constituencies. TMC, in contrast, has defended its record and portrayed BJP attacks as politically motivated attempts to polarize the electorate.

West Bengal recorded high turnout in the first phase of voting, with both BJP and TMC claiming the numbers reflect momentum in their favour. The second phase of polling is scheduled for April 29, with counting on May 4. As campaigning enters a decisive stretch, speeches like Modi’s indicate that women’s welfare, public safety, and symbolic ownership of Bengal’s political identity will remain central themes of the contest.
