Trump Announces Five-Day Pause on Military Strikes After Talks with Iran
Trump postpones strikes on Iran’s power plants after productive talks.
President Donald Trump on Monday announced that the United States and Iran have held “very good and productive conversations” regarding hostilities in the Middle East, and confirmed a temporary postponement of military strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five-day period.
Trump made the announcement through a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, describing the discussions as “in-depth, detailed, and constructive” and emphasising that talks would continue throughout the week. He added that the suspension of strikes is conditional on the ongoing success of these diplomatic efforts.
The statement comes days after Trump had threatened to “obliterate” Tehran’s power plants if the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz remained blocked. The waterway, which connects the Persian Gulf to the open ocean, has reportedly been shut down by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), raising global concerns about the disruption of oil exports.

Trump has repeatedly called on international partners, including NATO allies, to support efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. In recent remarks, he criticised several nations as “paper tigers” and “cowards” for not joining the US in resolving the situation. Iran, meanwhile, warned last week that any strikes on its power plants would trigger retaliatory attacks on energy infrastructure linked to both the United States and Israel in the region.
Over the weekend, Trump also stated that the US was close to achieving a complete degradation of Iran’s missile capabilities, including launchers and related systems, reaffirming his administration’s stated commitment to preventing Iran from approaching nuclear capability.
The announcement of a temporary pause in military action comes amid heightened global scrutiny over energy security and Middle East stability, while diplomatic channels remain active to prevent escalation of hostilities.
