PM Modi Conveys Eid, Nowruz Greetings to Iran, Discusses Regional Security

PM Modi speaks to Iran President, urges secure shipping lanes, and conveys Eid and Nowruz greetings.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, conveying Eid and Nowruz greetings and underscoring the urgent need to ensure safe and secure maritime shipping lanes in the wake of escalating Middle East tensions.

In the telephonic conversation, Modi condemned recent attacks on critical infrastructure in the region, which he said threaten stability and disrupt global supply chains. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and keeping vital shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, open. This strait is a crucial maritime corridor through which roughly 20 per cent of the world’s energy trade passes, and access has been severely restricted since the conflict began on February 28.

The Prime Minister also appreciated Iran’s ongoing support in ensuring the safety and security of Indian nationals in the country. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this marks the second conversation between Modi and President Pezeshkian since the conflict started. In an earlier call on March 12, the Iranian President briefed Modi on the situation in Iran and shared his perspective on regional developments. Modi had expressed deep concern about the evolving security environment, reiterating India’s stance that all disputes must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

The discussions come amid escalating hostilities in the region, following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, which triggered retaliatory attacks by Tehran on neighboring countries and Israel. The conflict has already affected global energy markets, pushing crude oil prices higher and threatening the stability of international shipping and trade.

Since the outbreak of hostilities, Prime Minister Modi has also engaged with leaders from several other countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, France, and Malaysia, highlighting India’s diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue and mitigate the impact of the conflict.

The conversation with Iran reflects India’s continuing focus on ensuring regional peace, protecting its nationals abroad, and maintaining the uninterrupted flow of critical energy supplies to global markets.
