Several Merchant Vessels Disabled By Fire Amid Military Activity In Gulf Waters

Several merchant vessels in the northern Gulf and Gulf of Oman were hit by disabling fire during military activity overnight, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The British navy-affiliated agency reported the incidents on Wednesday but said it could not confirm whether there were any casualties or environmental damage. The incidents come amid heightened military tensions involving the United States and Iran in the region.

UKMTO also reported a separate maritime incident about 24 nautical miles from Port Rashid in the United Arab Emirates. A vessel was observed listing while at anchor, which could indicate that it had taken on water following an attack involving an unidentified projectile. The agency did not provide further details about the vessel or identify those responsible for the reported incident.

The latest reports add to a series of incidents involving commercial shipping in and around the Gulf and the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is a major route for global energy supplies, making attacks or disruptions involving merchant vessels a significant concern for maritime traffic and regional security.

On Tuesday, US Central Command forces reported destroying five Iranian crude oil tankers after attempted missile attacks on a US Navy warship over the preceding two days. The developments marked a further escalation in the confrontation between Washington and Tehran, with commercial and energy-related shipping increasingly caught up in the wider military activity.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards subsequently reported that they had attacked two US vessels and eight oil tankers in the Gulf. The Guards claimed the vessels had attempted to cross an area of the Strait of Hormuz that they described as “prohibited and unsafe”. The claims could not immediately be independently verified, and details about the reported attacks remained limited.

The latest incidents underline the growing risks for commercial shipping operating through the Gulf and Gulf of Oman. With several vessels reportedly damaged and questions remaining over casualties and environmental impact, maritime authorities are closely monitoring developments in one of the world's most strategically important shipping regions.
