Woman Rescued After Jumping From 11th Floor During Berlin High-Rise Fire

Woman escapes Berlin high-rise fire after dramatic firefighter rescue.

A woman was rescued from a burning high-rise apartment in Berlin after she climbed onto an 11th-floor window ledge and jumped into a firefighter's rescue basket during a dramatic emergency operation. The incident took place on August 14 in the Friedrichshain neighbourhood near Ostbahnhof railway station, after a fire broke out at around 6:30 am. Smoke spread through the residential building, prompting firefighters to evacuate residents.

When emergency crews arrived, the woman was outside the window of her apartment as flames and thick smoke emerged from the building. However, the fire brigade's turntable ladder could reach only around the ninth floor, leaving the woman several metres above the rescue basket. Firefighters positioned the basket below her while continuing efforts to bring residents out of the building.

Footage of the rescue shows the woman attempting to move towards the floor below but struggling to find a secure foothold. As the fire intensified, she eventually positioned herself above the rescue basket and, after hesitating briefly, released her grip. She fell approximately two storeys before landing in the basket, where a firefighter was able to catch her. She was subsequently taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The building was evacuated while firefighters worked to contain the blaze. Around 115 residents were affected by the incident, with dozens reportedly rescued using ladders and other emergency equipment. Authorities said 13 people suffered minor injuries, while approximately 116 emergency personnel were deployed during the operation. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about three hours.

A fire service spokesperson described the operation as particularly demanding and requiring a significant number of personnel. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The dramatic rescue was recorded on video and subsequently circulated widely online, drawing attention to the difficulties emergency crews can face when fires affect upper floors of high-rise buildings.

The incident also prompted widespread reactions on social media, with many users expressing relief that the woman survived the jump. The rescue highlighted the challenges faced when standard firefighting equipment cannot immediately reach people trapped on higher floors. Fire officials have not indicated that jumping from a height is a generally safe escape method; in emergencies, residents should follow instructions from firefighters and use designated evacuation routes or other rescue measures whenever available.
