Russian Envoy Dismisses Western Sanctions As Pressure Tactics, Pledges India Energy Supply

Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov has affirmed that Moscow remains fully committed to fulfilling New Delhi's energy requirements, even as Western nations expand secondary sanctions and regulatory scrutiny targeting Russian oil trade. Speaking amid intensifying pressure from Western coalitions, Alipov characterized the sanctions and tariffs aimed at Russian oil exports as punitive "pressure tactics" that disregard the value of constructive global engagement between nations.

The ambassador's remarks come against the backdrop of expanding secondary sanctions imposed by Western countries, measures specifically designed to discourage third-party nations, including India, from continuing to engage in oil trade with major Russian producers. Alipov condemned these punitive frameworks, arguing that they are structured to disrupt Russia's price-competitive position in the global energy market rather than to foster genuine cooperation among trading partners.

"We would be ready to supply as much oil as India needs. Unfortunately, those who impose sanctions and tariffs have taken the path of pressure tactics instead of honest cooperation, which prevents those countries from offering a better deal to India in oil than us," Alipov stated, framing Russia's continued willingness to supply oil as being undermined not by market competition but by external political pressure exerted through sanctions and tariff mechanisms. Beyond addressing the sanctions themselves, Alipov also turned attention to India's broader foreign policy posture, emphasizing what he characterized as New Delhi's demonstrated confidence and independence in navigating international pressure.

"The question is — how confident is India? India has shown that it's able to stand its ground and defend its national interests. And when we speak about the sanctions pertaining to oil trade, the tariffs are also related to the cooperation between Russia and India in oil supplies. These interests are paramount for India," he said, suggesting that India's continued engagement with Russian energy exports reflects a deliberate assertion of its own strategic and economic priorities rather than passive alignment with either side.

The ambassador's comments arrive at a moment of heightened scrutiny over India-Russia energy ties, with Western nations, particularly the United States, having ramped up efforts to penalize countries continuing to purchase Russian oil and gas. Legislative measures, including a sanctions bill passed by the U.S. Senate targeting nations that maintain energy trade relationships with Russia, have added further pressure on countries like India to reconsider their reliance on Russian crude, even as New Delhi has continued to defend its energy purchasing decisions as being driven primarily by economic necessity and national interest.
