Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Mandates Urgent Technical Overhaul To Resolve Signalling Issues

Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday chaired a detailed safety review meeting at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi, directing officials to address technical deficiencies related to signalling systems in "mission mode," signaling a heightened sense of urgency around resolving long-standing infrastructure issues within the Indian Railways network. The meeting brought together senior officials to review various aspects of railway safety and maintenance protocols currently in place across the system.

During the meeting, Vaishnaw also issued specific directions concerning Overhead Equipment (OHE), the infrastructure responsible for supplying electrical power to trains via overhead lines. He called for necessary action to ensure proper maintenance and timely replacement of OHE components at locations where equipment has already completed its prescribed service life, underscoring the importance of proactive infrastructure upgrades rather than reactive repairs following equipment failure or malfunction.

Beyond signalling and overhead equipment, the Railway Minister further directed officials to improve maintenance standards within railway workshops, with particular attention paid to coaches, especially the condition of electrical circuits and wiring related to fire safety. This emphasis on fire safety within coach electrical systems reflects ongoing concerns regarding passenger safety, given that faulty wiring and electrical malfunctions have historically been identified as contributing factors in fire-related incidents aboard trains in various contexts.

After hearing the views and input of officials present at the meeting, Vaishnaw also stressed the need to focus attention on the maintenance of couplers and wheels of wagons and coaches, two critical mechanical components that play a direct role in ensuring the structural integrity and safe operation of trains during transit. Proper maintenance of these components is essential to preventing derailments and other safety incidents that could arise from mechanical failure.

The comprehensive scope of the directives issued during the meeting, spanning signalling systems, overhead electrical equipment, workshop maintenance standards, and mechanical components such as couplers and wheels, reflects a broader push by the Railway Ministry to address multiple dimensions of railway safety simultaneously rather than in isolation. This kind of consolidated review approach suggests an effort to identify and resolve interconnected vulnerabilities across the railway system's infrastructure before they can contribute to safety incidents.
