Rescue Efforts Continue In Venezuela After Quakes Leave Widespread Debris

Rescue efforts continue after Venezuela earthquakes cause devastation.

Residents of Venezuela’s capital Caracas were left scrambling through debris and shattered buildings after two powerful earthquakes struck the region in quick succession, causing widespread destruction and panic across the city. In the aftermath, desperate search efforts unfolded as families and neighbours tried to locate missing loved ones trapped under collapsed structures, including a 22-storey residential building in the Los Palos Grandes district.

At the scene of the collapsed Petunia residential complex, emotional cries for survivors echoed through the rubble. One mother repeatedly called out for her son, “Antonio, it’s your mom, I’m right here,” as volunteers searched the debris by hand in the absence of proper rescue equipment. Local residents joined emergency efforts, though they were largely forced to rely on flashlights and limited support while waiting for official rescue teams to arrive.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion and fear as buildings shook violently and entire structures gave way. In several areas, volunteers and neighbours attempted to locate survivors, while others broke down emotionally amid the destruction. One man was seen weeping in the street as families gathered outside damaged homes, uncertain about the fate of those still inside.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the twin earthquakes measured magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 and struck around 6 pm local time (2200 GMT), followed by approximately 20 aftershocks. Venezuelan officials reported that the tremors severely impacted multiple states, including Trujillo, Carabobo, Miranda, and La Guaira, with Interior Ministry authorities confirming injuries but not releasing exact figures. A state of emergency was declared, and the country’s main airport was temporarily closed due to reported damage.

Survivors described terrifying moments as the ground shook violently and buildings swayed or collapsed. In nearby neighbourhoods, residents fled apartments and offices, some describing a deep roaring sound accompanying the tremors. Many said they initially hesitated on how to respond before rushing outdoors as the shaking intensified, while debris fell from ceilings and staircases buckled inside commercial buildings.

The earthquakes, among the strongest in Venezuela’s recent history, have revived memories of past devastating quakes in the region, including those in 1967 and 1997. As emergency teams continue search-and-rescue operations, the full scale of casualties and damage remains uncertain, with authorities still assessing the impact across affected regions and neighbouring districts.
