The origins of World Environment Day date back to the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972. Following this landmark conference, June 5 was officially designated as World Environment Day by the United Nations, with the first observance taking place in 1973. Since then, it has grown into a worldwide movement focused on addressing urgent ecological concerns.
The day highlights pressing global issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. Various initiatives, including tree plantation drives, awareness campaigns, and community clean-up activities, are organised globally to encourage sustainable living practices. Each year, a host country and theme are selected to focus attention on specific environmental priorities.
Experts and global organisations continue to stress that individual actions play a crucial role in environmental protection alongside government policies. Simple lifestyle changes such as reducing waste, conserving water, and adopting eco-friendly habits are seen as essential steps toward long-term sustainability. The Prime Minister’s message aligns with this global call for collective action to protect the environment for future generations.
