Rahul Gandhi Visits Police Station, Seeks FIR Over Pellet-Gun Injury Claim

Rahul Gandhi seeks FIR over alleged pellet-gun injuries during July 20 protest.

High drama unfolded in the capital on Friday when Congress MP Rahul Gandhi arrived at the Parliament Street Police Station with a young man who allegedly suffered pellet-gun injuries during a student protest on July 20. Gandhi, who is the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, accompanied the alleged victim, Sahil Lochab, and other individuals to the police station and sought the registration of a First Information Report into the incident. The development has intensified the political dispute over allegations of excessive force during the protest.

The Congress has alleged that personnel from the Rapid Action Force used pellet guns during the July 20 “Sansad Chalo” march involving students. The party's claims came after several protesters reportedly sustained injuries during and following the demonstration. Congress leaders have demanded an investigation into the alleged use of pellet guns and have questioned the circumstances in which protesters suffered injuries during the confrontation with security personnel.

Rahul Gandhi's visit to the police station came as the controversy over the alleged use of pellet guns continued. Visuals showed him entering the police station alongside Lochab and other people. The presence of the senior Congress leader reportedly caught police officials by surprise. Gandhi sought an FIR concerning the alleged shooting and injuries, putting pressure on authorities to formally examine the allegations and record the account of the alleged victim.

Delhi Police has repeatedly denied allegations that its personnel used pellet guns during the July 20 protest. The Central Reserve Police Force, however, has not publicly provided a detailed response to the specific allegations concerning the use of pellet guns. The disagreement over the incident has consequently remained unresolved, with political parties and protesters calling for greater clarity regarding the actions of security personnel during the demonstration.

The allegations have also been supported by accounts from protesters who said they suffered injuries during the confrontation. Medical reports concerning some of the injured individuals have added to questions surrounding the nature and cause of their injuries. The Congress has pointed to these accounts and documents while challenging the official denial regarding the use of pellet guns and demanding that the matter be investigated through a formal police case.

The latest development is likely to keep the July 20 protest at the centre of a political debate in Delhi. Gandhi's decision to accompany an alleged victim directly to a police station has given the demand for an FIR greater political visibility. The police response to the complaint, along with any investigation into the alleged injuries and the conduct of security personnel, will determine whether the claims can be substantiated. The controversy also comes amid continuing calls from protesters and opposition leaders for accountability over the events surrounding the “Sansad Chalo” march.
