Pune Engineer Missing After Hormuz Ship Attack Confirmed Dead

Heramb Karmarkar, a third engineer aboard the container vessel MV GFS Galaxy, has been confirmed dead after going missing following a projectile attack on the ship in the Strait of Hormuz. His family confirmed the development on Tuesday after receiving information from the authorities. Karmarkar, a resident of Pune, was the only crew member who remained unaccounted for after the vessel was struck while sailing near Omani waters, forcing the crew to abandon ship.

Confirming the tragic news, family member Rishi Tandon said the authorities had informed them that Karmarkar had died. The confirmation brought an end to days of uncertainty after rescue efforts failed to locate the missing engineer. His death has drawn attention to the risks faced by merchant navy personnel operating in one of the world's most strategically important and volatile maritime routes.

According to available information, the MV GFS Galaxy was transporting cargo when it came under attack at around 3:30 am IST on Sunday while sailing near Omani waters in the Strait of Hormuz. A projectile struck the vessel, reportedly triggering a fire in the engine room and leaving the ship without propulsion. The crew managed to anchor the vessel before evacuating into lifeboats as emergency procedures were initiated.

The evacuation ensured the safety of the remaining crew members, but Karmarkar could not be accounted for during the rescue operation.
